Cumin seeds are used in cooking as a condiment but also have useful medicinal properties in cases of flatulence, to stimulate digestion, reduce bloating and abdominal gases while eliminating the spasms of the intestine and are helpful to improve appetite and bad breath. They also stimulate lactation, as do fennel seeds.
Cumin is sometimes confused with caraway (Carum carvi), another umbelliferous spice, though Cumin is hotter to the taste, lighter in colour, and larger. The distantly related Bunium persicum, Bunium bulbocastanum and the unrelated Nigella sativa are both sometimes called black cumin.
