The extraordinary powers of turmeric

Used for thousands of years, turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a multi-faceted spice. Native to South Asia, it is best known for its role in Indian cuisine, particularly in curries, to which it gives its characteristic golden-yellow color.

But far beyond its aromatic qualities, turmeric is a mainstay of Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, where it is used to treat a wide range of ailments, from inflammatory pain to digestive disorders.

Today, modern science is increasingly confirming the virtues of this golden root, thanks in particular to the study of its major active ingredient: curcumin.

Curcumin: a compound with powerful biological effects

Curcumin is the main polyphenol in turmeric. It is responsible for the majority of this plant's health benefits. Numerous studies have highlighted its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, neuroprotective and antimicrobial properties.

1. A powerful natural anti-inflammatory

Chronic inflammation is at the heart of many modern pathologies: arthritecardiovascular diseases, metabolic disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. Curcumin acts by inhibiting key molecules in the inflammatory process, such as the transcription factor NF-κB and pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6).

Clinical studies have shown that curcumin can be as effective as some non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), without causing the undesirable side effects on the digestive system.

2. A major antioxidant against oxidative stress

Oxidative stress, induced by free radicals, is implicated in cellular aging and many chronic diseases. Curcumin acts as a free radical scavenger, stimulating the activity of various antioxidant enzymes in the body, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase.

3. Cardiovascular protection

Curcumin has been shown to improve endothelial function, essential for good cardiovascular health. It also helps reduce LDL cholesterol, prevent lipid oxidation and limit platelet aggregation, making it a potential ally in the prevention of atherosclerosis.

4. Liver and digestive system support

5. Potential effects on certain cancers

Laboratory research has shown that curcumin can inhibit tumour cell proliferation, induce apoptosis (programmed death), and prevent the formation of new blood vessels feeding tumours (angiogenesis). These promising results have yet to be confirmed by large-scale clinical trials, but they pave the way for new, complementary therapeutic strategies.

6. Neuroprotection and prevention of cognitive decline

Recent research suggests that curcumin may cross the blood-brain barrier and exert a protective effect on neurons. It is being studied for its potential to slow the progression of diseases such as Alzheimer's or Parkinsonby reducing cerebral inflammation and inhibiting the formation of amyloid plaques.

Turmeric: assimilate well to enjoy its benefits

Curcumin's bioavailability, i.e. its capacity to be absorbed and used by the body, is naturally low. However, there are ways to increase its assimilation:

  • Combining turmeric with piperine (found in black pepper) can multiply its absorption by up to 20 times.

  • Consuming it with fat also favors its absorption, as it is a fat-soluble compound.

  • Standardized curcumin extracts, available in supplement form, offer higher, more easily assimilated concentrations.
