What is a mother tincture?

The mother tincture, also known as alcoholature, is a hydroalcoholic solution made from a mixture of fresh plants and alcohol. This well-known phytotherapy remedy also plays an important role in homeopathic practice, as it is used to make dilutions and is the basis for many homeopathic medicines.

Production of a mother tincture extracted from the site santi-shop "To make it, the plant is macerated in a solution of pure alcohol (between 60° and 95°). Then, for three weeks, the mixture must be stirred regularly to extract the plant's active elements. When this stage is complete, the solution is filtered to retain only the liquid part.

The manufacture of mother tinctures is strictly controlled by the pharmaceutical industry, and laboratories producing mother tinctures must have BFP (Good Manufacturing Practice) certification from the French National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM).

Mother tinctures are made from dried plants, and are now considered to be medicines, and therefore subject to the pharmaceutical monopoly. The quantity of plant used is 100 grams of dry plant per kg of finished product = ratio 1/1 (= as much plant equivalent to fresh weight as 80° alcohol) (less when seeds or flowers alone are used)

Maceration takes place in 96° or 80° organic wheat alcohol, for 1 week; then reduced to 40° / volume by adding distilled water, and maceration continues for at least 3 weeks. This is done in glass carboys, simply filtered with organic cotton, and stored in tinted glass bottles. "
