Essential oils for tummy aches

Chers Santies,

Stomach aches can manifest themselves in a variety of ways, and can sometimes become a real nuisance in our daily lives. They are often linked to digestive problems, which can arise from liver weakness. From diarrhoea, constipation and bloating, to more serious conditions such as IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), tummy aches can have a variety of origins, including emotional ones.

In addition to comprehensive treatment when symptoms are too bothersome, the essential oils can help relieve certain discomforts, while respecting the intestinal flora and taking care of our second brain. That's why it's important to observe the general precautions for the use of essential oils: no oral use in children under 7 years of age, no use in pregnant women during the 1st trimester of pregnancy, and no use in nursing mothers.

Peppermint essential oil

Thanks to its choleretic and cholagogue action, peppermint essential oil is a must in cases of nausea, heavy digestion (especially after a big meal), acid reflux and gas, and the menthol it contains acts on the liver while positively toning the body. Discover

How to use peppermint essential oil as a depurative?

The liver is a major organ of the digestive system, and its good health is essential for efficient digestion. It is considered to be the body's essential filter, draining around 1.5 liters of blood per minute and helping to detoxify the body, making it the conductor of our homeostasis. Often put to the test by the intake of toxins from our daily lives (poor-quality food, pesticides, drugs, alcohol...), it's advisable to let it rest from time to time to give it a chance to regenerate. The good news is that liver cells regenerate in just 6 weeks!

Peppermint EO, as well as lovage, rosemary verbenone and lemon oil, helps the liver to detoxify. After a "busy" period, don't hesitate to take one of these essential oils, or a drop of each, at a rate of 2 drops in the morning on an empty stomach for 21 days, in a teaspoon of olive oil to reinforce the choleretic and cholagogue effect (i.e. stimulates the production of bile, essential for digestion and facilitates its evacuation).

Special precautions for peppermint essential oil

Peppermint EO should not be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women, children under 12, asthmatics, people with epilepsy or a history of seizure disorders, or the elderly.

In the case of homeopathic treatment, take this EO orally 3 to 4 hours before taking the treatment. Rosemary verbenone EO is also not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women, or for children under 12.

Les essential oils for stomach spasms

To reduce the spasms that sometimes agitate the stomach or intestines, and which can be very painful, exotic basil essential oil is indicated for its strong nervous and muscular antispasmodic action, as well as for its beneficial activity on intestinal flora.

It is effective against hiccups, aerophagia, colic, pain associated with spasmophilia... In addition, its aroma makes it ideal for use in cooking, but use sparingly due to its powerful taste! A similar EO is tarragon.

  • How to use in case of hiccups? Melt 1 drop in the mouth on a neutral tablet.
  • For digestive problems: dilute 1 drop of basil and 1 drop of peppermint in a teaspoon of honey and mix with an infusion of lemon balm, preferably for its anti-spasmodic action.
  • For painful periods: apply 2 drops diluted in a teaspoon of vegetable oil, massaging into the lower abdomen in circles.
  • In case of constipation: thanks to its muscular antispasmodic action, massage 2 drops diluted in a tablespoon of vegetable oil in a clockwise direction, concentrating on the descending colon (left).
  • In case of infectious diarrhea: to relieve painful spasms due to this condition, mix 1 drop of Ceylon cinnamon EO, 1 drop of oregano EO and 1 drop of exotic basil EO on sugar or a neutral tablet and ingest 3 times a day for 5 days. This blend is not suitable for pregnant or breast-feeding women, or children under 12.

Special precautions: always apply to the skin diluted. For oral use, do not exceed 2 doses of 2 drops per 24 hours. Do not use on a long-term basis, as there is a risk of hepatotoxicity. Do not use orally during pregnancy, while breast-feeding, or on children under 12.

Other essential oils for bloating and gas

Bloating and gas are common phenomena that are unpleasant over time, sometimes embarrassing, but above all painful.

In fact, the intestine is home to a commensal flora, the famous microbiota. In the event of dysbiosis (an imbalance caused by the presence of too much pathogenic flora), fermentation reactions (in the right colon) or putrefaction (in the left colon) occur, leading to the formation of gas.

This can be reduced by adapting lifestyle habits (sufficient chewing, choice of fibers, eating meals in a calm atmosphere), and by using carminative essential oils (which promote the expulsion of intestinal gases, while reducing their production) such as caraway, fennel, aniseed, coriander and cardamom. Cardamom is unique in that it has no contraindications (apart from those related to use) and combines carminative and antispasmodic actions, at the rate of one drop in a teaspoon of olive oil or honey, 3 times a day (from age 6).

Less well-known for this use, essential oil of noble laurel is antiputrid. It prevents the proliferation of protein-degrading bacteria (putrefactive flora). It helps rebalance intestinal flora, preventing intestinal hyperpermeability. Laurel essential oil can therefore be used in cases of spasmodic colitis, as follows:

  • Take 1 drop of bay laurel and 1 drop of Ceylon cinnamon on sugar or a neutral tablet every day for 15 days. Discover
Laurier Noble

Special precautions

Laurel essential oil is not suitable for prolonged use, in cases of asthma, history of seizure disorders, and is epileptogenic. Cinnamon essential oil is dermo-caustic, and should not be used by pregnant or breast-feeding women, or by children under 6. Use with caution in cases of asthma.

A word from the naturopath about tummy aches

Stomach aches are not to be taken lightly, as they often reveal stress and internalized emotions. Whether it's something "that just won't go away", that we're holding back, or on the contrary, that we're letting go more than normal, these symptoms tell us that we need to undertake a change in the way we apprehend external events, as they have too much of a hold on our inner well-being!

This advice is not medical and does not exempt you from consulting a doctor if symptoms persist.
