Dried nettle seeds, here the achenes and their envelopes, can be eaten as is or or sprinkled on various foods to enjoy their numerous and surprisingly active healthy nutrients. They have herbaceous slightly oily taste, stimulate all body functions and are ideal in situations of exhaustion.
For over 2000 years nettles have been used for alimentary and therapeutic purposes and in recent years, the amazing properties of their seeds (comparable to those of ginseng) have been highlighted by Western herbalists. In addition to their remarkable stimulating (and aphrodisiac) properties, nettle seeds are depurative (as nettle leaves), have an anti-infective, diuretic, uric acid eliminating, liver draining, anti-diarrheal, stomachic, anti-anemic and antirachitic effect. Note that unlike other tonics, they do not seem to affect the quality of night sleep and that through their stimulating effect they tend to give "feel like to do things" keeping an alert mind, which makes them particularly interesting as etiological treatment in a number of pathologies (eg mild depression). In addition nettle seeds regulate the menstrual cycle, are beneficial in prostate diseases and prove to be a prime kidney tonic (leaves and seeds regenerate renal tissue but especially the seeds seem to be very effective) useful also in case of dialysis and nephritis.
Nettle seeds were formerly given to horses to improve their vitality and give them a beautiful coat. Nettle seeds are recognized beneficial for the hair, useful in case of hair loss.
Nettle seeds give great hopes because research has discovered a lectin in them which has shown in vitro anti-cancer and HIV virus powerfully inhibiting properties.
