Niaouli: an antibacterial and antiviral essential oil
Native to Madagascar, Australia, and New Caledonia, Melaleuca quinquenervia produces an essential oil with a highly complex aroma, featuring fresh, camphorated, and slightly sulfurous notes. A true staple of aromatherapy, Bioflore organic niaouli essential oil is renowned for its many purifying, stimulating, and protective properties.
Antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal, it is traditionally used to support the respiratory system during the winter months. Its action also extends to the genitourinary and skin systems, where it helps to combat imbalances caused by fungi or bacteria.
Expectorant and decongestant, it promotes freer breathing and can be combined with eucalyptus or ravintsara.
In terms of circulation, it is an excellent venous decongestant: when diluted and used in massage, it relieves heavy legs and varicose veins and improves venous return, especially when used in synergy with cypress. Well tolerated by the skin, it also acts as a skin tonic, supporting tissue regeneration. Some traditional uses recommend it as a protective application on areas of skin exposed to radiotherapy.
Directions for use
- Local rub: 3 to 4 drops diluted in vegetable oil, 2 to 3 times a day, as needed (breathing, circulation, skin).
- Diffusion: to purify the air and stimulate the natural defenses.
- In cosmetics: 1 drop in a small amount of night cream to tone the skin.
- For cold sores: 1 drop of niaouli combined with 1 drop of ravintsara, applied locally 2 to 3 times a day.
Precautions
- Do not use on pregnant or breastfeeding women or children under 30 months of age.
- Not recommended for hormone-dependent conditions.
- This essential oil is well tolerated, but may irritate the most sensitive skin: its concentration in a soothing plant base (e.g., Calendula oil macerate) should be adjusted on a case-by-case basis.
- Keep out of the reach of children.
- Avoid contact with the eyes.
- Store away from heat and light.
- This essential oil is pure and therefore powerful. It can be used in cooking if it is first diluted according to the recommendations, dispersed in a fatty substance (oil, dairy product), alcoholic substance, or syrupy substance (honey, syrup). It must not be ingested undiluted.
