What is resveratrol? Why should we consume it?

Despite the abundant literature on the subject of the many natural antioxidants on the market, resveratrol still occupies a prominent place. This antioxidant very effective belongs to the family of polyphenols, molecules contained in certain fruits and vegetables and in particular in grapes (particularly in the skin and seeds), raspberries, blackberries and peanuts.

Grapes naturally produce resveratrol as a defense against fungi, a clever name for fungi or parasites of certain plants. The highest concentration of resveratrol has been found in muscat grapes because of their thick skins and numerous seeds.

Many researchers believe that resveratrol is the main culprit in what is known as the "French paradox". This paradox highlights that the French, who do not care at all about their food hygiene but who drink wine, have in most cases a better cardiovascular health than the average population. The researchers explain the reason for this cardiovascular protection by the resveratrol very present in red wine and whose solubility is increased thanks to the presence of alcohol.

However, resveratrol is different from most antioxidants because it is the only one that can cross the blood-brain barrier and protect the brain and central nervous system from oxidative damage. Studies prove that resveratrol increases the life span of human cells. By neutralizing free radicals, resveratrol reduces the oxidative damage they can cause to the cardiovascular system and at the same time supports the body's natural defense system. The benefits of resveratrol work in several ways, namely:

  • protection of cells against free radical damage
  • Reducing the risk of cancer, particularly prostate cancer
  • normalization of blood pressure
  • maintaining a healthy and efficient heart and the elasticity of blood vessels
  • normalization of the body's anti-inflammatory responses in general

Resveratrol clearly slows down the aging process and reduces the risk of developing degenerative pathologies such as Alzheimer's disease for example.

So think about consuming this completely natural molecule on a regular basis, which is a major asset for longevity.
