DIY: Your Own Natural Homemade Deodorant

How can you easily make your own natural deodorant at home?

Would you like to reduce the list of ingredients in your cosmetics while saving money? Making your own natural deodorant at home is a great alternative. Easy to make with just a few ingredients, it lets you control what goes into it, reduce packaging, and tailor your personal care routine to your skin’s needs.

Find out why more and more people are turning to DIY cosmetics and how to make a natural deodorant that’s simple, effective, and pleasant to use every day.

Why Make Your Own Deodorant?

The commercial available on the market are convenient, but their ingredients can sometimes be hard to understand. Depending on the brand, they contain various ingredients designed to add fragrance, preserve the product, or reduce sweat-related odors.

Even though the products on the market comply with strict regulations, many people today prefer formulas that are simpler and more natural, especially if they have sensitive skin or want to limit the number of unnecessary ingredients in their bathroom.

Making your own deodorant has many benefits. You get to choose each ingredient yourself, tailor the recipe to your preferences, and reduce waste by reusing the same container for several months.

DIY also allows you to make a cost-effective product. Just a few ingredients are enough to make several jars of deodorant, which is often cheaper than buying ready-made products.

Finally, making your own cosmetics is also a way to rediscover simple rituals and embrace more responsible consumption.

Deodorant or Antiperspirant: What's the Difference?

These terms are often used as synonyms, even though they do not serve the same function.

Deodorant primarily targets the bacteria that cause body odor. It helps you stay feeling fresh while allowing you to sweat naturally.

Theantiperspirant, on the other hand, is designed to reduce the amount of sweat through specific active ingredients.

However, sweating is an essential physiological process. In particular, it helps regulate body temperature during physical activity or when it is hot. The purpose of a natural deodorant is therefore not to prevent this process, but to reduce the odors that can occur when bacteria on the skin break down sweat.

Is homemade deodorant really effective?

That's often the first question people ask themselves before getting started.

Contrary to popular belief, sweat is virtually odorless. It is the bacteria naturally present on the skin that break down certain components of sweat and cause odors.

The ingredients used in this recipe actually help limit the growth of the bacteria that cause unpleasant odors. When used properly, a natural, homemade deodorant can therefore provide effective protection every day.

However, some people do experience a brief adjustment period when they switch from a conventional product to a homemade recipe. This is usually temporary and depends primarily on each person’s habits, how much they sweat, and their lifestyle.

Like all cosmetics, a deodorant doesn't necessarily work the same way for everyone. The beauty of DIY is that you can gradually adjust the recipe to suit your needs.

The Ingredients for a Homemade Natural Deodorant

This recipe calls for just three complementary ingredients.

Coconut oil

Naturally nourishing, coconut oil gives the deodorant a creamy texture and helps protect the underarm skin. It also has beneficial antibacterial properties that make it an essential ingredient in many DIY recipes.

Choose virgin coconut oil, ideally from organic farming.

Please note that it becomes liquid when the temperature exceeds about 25 °C. This change in texture is completely normal and does not affect the product's effectiveness.

Baking Soda

The baking soda helps neutralize unpleasant odors by limiting the growth of the bacteria that cause them.

It is recommended to choose a very fine baking soda to reduce the risk of irritation. People with particularly sensitive skin may also want to slightly reduce the amount used in the recipe.

Palmarosa Essential Oil

Widely used in homemade cosmetics, palmarosa essential oil is prized for its purifying properties. It helps reduce unpleasant odors while providing a fresh, subtle fragrance.

Like all essential oils, it should always be used diluted in a vegetable oil and in the recommended amounts.

Recipe for Homemade Natural Deodorant

Ingredients

For a jar of about 50 g:

  • 5 teaspoons of organic coconut oil.
  • 2 teaspoons of fine baking soda.
  • 15 drops of palmarosa essential oil.

Preparation

  1. Gently melt the coconut oil in a double boiler.
  2. Next, add the baking soda and mix thoroughly until the mixture is smooth.
  3. Add the drops of palmarosa essential oil, then stir one last time.
  4. Immediately pour the mixture into a clean small jar with a lid.
  5. Let it cool until it reaches a creamy consistency. While it's cooling, stir it once or twice to ensure the baking soda remains evenly distributed throughout the mixture.

How do you use your homemade deodorant?

Take a small amount of the product with a clean finger, then apply it to clean, completely dry underarms.

A small amount is usually enough to provide effective protection throughout the day.

If your deodorant becomes too runny in hot weather, simply put it in the refrigerator for a few minutes so it regains a firmer texture.

Precautions for Use

Even though this recipe is made with all-natural ingredients, there are still a few precautions you need to take.

Before using the product for the first time, test it on a small area of skin to ensure there is no skin reaction.

Avoid applying deodorant immediately after shaving if your skin is irritated or has small cuts. Baking soda can cause a tingling sensation on sensitive skin.

Essential oils are not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women or for young children, unless advised by a healthcare professional. If you cannot use essential oils, you can easily make this recipe using only coconut oil and baking soda.

Finally, if you have particularly sensitive skin, feel free to reduce the amount of baking soda slightly or try the recipe for a few days to make sure it works for you.

How should you store your homemade deodorant?

To preserve all the qualities of your mixture, store it in a clean, dry container and make sure to close it tightly after each use.

Always use clean hands when handling the product to minimize contamination.

When stored at room temperature, away from moisture and excessive heat, your deodorant will generally last two to three months.

While its texture may change with the seasons, simply chill it for a few minutes or, conversely, let it return to room temperature before using it.

Try DIY for a more natural routine

Making your own natural deodorant at home is a simple way to take control of the ingredients in your cosmetics. With just a few easy-to-find ingredients, you can create an affordable, customizable product that’s pleasant to use every day.

Whether you want to reduce packaging, simplify your beauty routine, or try your hand at DIY cosmetics, this recipe is a great first step toward a more natural bathroom.
