The mother tincture, or here the Fresh Plant Extract (FPE), of Papaver rhoeas or poppy, has a mild sedative and antitussive action and is used against sleep disorders, hoarseness, coughs and bronchial affections. Its gentle, non-addictive action makes it equally suitable for children and the elderly.
Other names include field poppy, red poppy and wild poppy.

- Latin name: Papaver rhoeas
- The red color of the poppy is due to the presence of anthocyanosides. The petals are rich in mucilage and contain tannins and anthocyanin pigments that give them their red color, as well as alkaloids (total content approx. 0.07 to 0.12%), most notably rhœadine (nearly 50% of the total) with sedative properties. Unlike the sleeping poppy (Papaver somniferum), poppies do not contain morphine.
