Le coquelicot, une plante sauvage qui nourrit l'inspiration

The poppy, Papaver rhoeas from its botanical name, is also called red poppy. It is said that where the poppy grows, the soil is rather chalky. The poppy is a messicolous plant, which means it grows in grain crops. Once weeded with highly polluting chemicals, the poppy is reclaiming fields, roadsides and embankments.

The stems, bristling with hair, bear uni- or bipinnate leaves, also hairy. The flowers consist of 4 red and elliptical petals and have a dark spot at their base. The poppy fades very quickly once picked.

Did you know?

Its red color indicates its exotic origin because no insect in our regions can perceive this color which appears to them as dark gray. However, it emits in the ultraviolet, a colored wave that the bee perceives.

Finally, we can't talk about poppies without mentioning the series of paintings by impressionist Claude Monet including Les Coquelicots, completed in 1873 and exhibited at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris which depicts various fields of poppies
