Relieving dental pain with essential oils

The first thing to do when you have a toothache is to make an appointment with a dentist. But it can be a long wait! Toothache is one of the hardest pains to bear. Here are a few effective recipes based on essential oils to alleviate toothache.

Clove essential oil

Clove essential oil against cavities and toothache.

The best-known essential oil for toothache is Clove. Its high eugenol content makes it a highly effective antiseptic and analgesic.

Clove essential oil has an anesthetic effect that soothes the pain of cavities. It is therefore highly effective when applied locally. However, this oil should not be used undiluted, as it may burn the gums. 

To soothe a toothache, you can dilute 50% of the following solution Clove essential oil with edible vegetable oil (olive oil, sunflower oil...) and apply the mixture to the sore tooth with a cotton bud. 

Clove essential oil has a powerful action, so don't repeat the operation more than 4 times a day. Avoid prolonging treatment beyond 3 to 5 days.

If your toothache is keeping you awake at night, you're better off using a clay dressing with clove essential oil, which has a longer-lasting effect. Simply make a thick paste and put it on the tooth in the evening before bed, with 5 grams of green clay and 2 drops of clove oil. d’argile verte et 2 gouttes dClove essential oil. This dressing should be removed the next day when you wake up.

Finally, Clove essential oil has a preventive action against cavities and toothache by limiting the proliferation of oral bacteria. Use it as a mouthwash after brushing your teeth, diluting one or two drops of oil in a glass of water.

This oil should not be used on children under 12, pregnant women or people with coagulation problems or taking anticoagulant treatment, or people with hepatitis or cirrhosis, as it is hepatotoxic.

Essential oil for growing wisdom teeth 

Toothache can also be caused by the eruption of one or more teeth, both in babies and young adults, when wisdom teeth appear. Roman Chamomile essential oil, also known as Noble Chamomile, will help you through this delicate period. The great advantage of this oil is that it is well tolerated by infants as young as 3 months. Its anti-inflammatory and soothing properties provide effective relief for gums made sore by teething.

To use, simply dilute :

  • 2 drops Roman Chamomile essential oil with 
  • 3 ml olive oil. 

Then take two drops of this mixture to gently massage into the gums 2 times a day for 4 to 5 days. Roman Chamomile essential oil can also be used with theLavender Fine essential oil with anti-inflammatory properties for greater effectiveness in relieving teething pain.

Then massage the painful gums with this mixture 2 times a day for 4 to 5 days. Roman Chamomile essential oil is contraindicated for babies under 3 months, pregnant women under 3 months, nursing mothers and people allergic to Asteraceae.

Soothe the pain of abscessed teeth with an essential oil

Poorly treated cavities can develop into dental abscesses. The accumulation of pus makes the gums swollen and painful around the tooth. It's then imperative to make an emergency appointment with a dentist. While waiting for a consultation, the use ofTea Tree essential oil with its antiseptic and antibacterial action can help limit both pain and infection.

Un bain de bouche A mouthwash 4 times a day with 5 drops of essential oil diluted in a glass of lukewarm water will provide effective relief. Tea Tree essential oil also contributes to good oral hygiene and helps combat mouth ulcers and gingivitis. 

It should not be used on pregnant women under 3 months, breast-feeding women or children under 3 years of age.
