Household products have a significant place in the amount of plastic waste we produce each year, this is no longer in question. But do you know what is really hidden in these famous "miracle" products, with "super degreasing powers"? Chemicals that can disrupt our hormonal system, so-called "endocrine disruptors." In this article we are going to give you solutions that are all simple and yet equally effective to clean your home in an eco-friendly, economical and non-harmful way for your health and that of your loved ones.

Toxic household products ?

How a product supposed to clean up our home be bad for my health? If it kills bacteria, it can only be positive.

Think again, household products contain chemical compounds such as alkylphenols, phthalates and pesticides, which have the effect of disrupting our hormonal system, which in the long run can cause diseases such as certain cancers, infertility, obesity, thyroid problems,...

And although these are not directly in contact with our skin, the mere fact ofbreathing them already has a negative impact on our health: diseases, allergies, ...

And we're not even talking about the environmental impacts that these products create.

Natural solutions for cleaning

The good news is that there arenatural solutions that are good for the environment and don't endanger your health. As you will see, the ingredients are common, you can find them in supermarkets, organic stores or drugstores, and the recipes are super simple. No need to have a degree in chemistry or pharmacy! Your kitchen will be your laboratory as long as you respect some basic hygiene rules. Start by washing your hands (you can also use gloves) and all the equipment and utensils you will be using.

The ingredients you'll need are white vinegar, citrus peels, baking soda, citric acid, soda crystals, liquid black soap and Tea-tree essential oil.

Natural ingredients

  • White vinegar is cleaning. It dissolves limescale and scale, removes marks from windows and mirrors, unclogs and maintains pipes and eliminates bad odors. In most cases, be sure to rinse it well!
  • Citrus peels (orange, tangerine, lemon, grapefruit, ...), a natural source of citric acid, help deodorize and sanitize. They are 100% biodegradable and non-toxic. The little extra of lemon: it degreases, deodorizes, whitens the laundry and restores the shine to aluminum and copper.
  • Baking soda as for it, allows you to eliminate odors, unclog stubborn stains and unclog and sanitize the pipes.
  • Citric acid, a multi-purpose cleaner, is a powerful anti-scale. It is also fungicidal, kills bacteria, reduces rust, ...
  • Soda crystals, not to be confused withbaking soda, also have strong cleaning, disinfecting and degreasing power. They can be used for multiple cleaning and anti-scale functions and are suitable for all types of surfaces (enamel, tiles, stone, etc.)
  • Liquid black soap, made from vegetable oil (often flax or olive) and potassium hydroxide, is a good cleaner, degreaser. A little plus compared to most industrial household products: it is hypoallergenic.
  • Tea-tree essential oil is a broad spectrum purifier. Antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, its virtues are multiple. In addition, it leaves a small smell in your home, which is not always found when using natural products.

Beware, however, that this is an essential oil and that precautions are in order. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Also be very careful if you are pregnant, nursing, or have young children.

All of these products are generallycheap and easy to use. Moreover, you will find them in supermarkets, organic stores or drugstores.

Recipes for cleaning naturally

1- Floor cleaner

  • 40g of soda crystals
  • 150g of liquid black soap
  • 800 ml of water at room temperature
  • 30 drops of Tea-Tree essential oil (disinfectant and anti-bacterial)
  • 2 tablespoons of white vinegar

Pour the 800 ml of water into a large container and add the soda crystals.

Let the soda crystals dissolve for about 20 minutes.

Mix and add black soap, the two tablespoons of vinegar and the essential oil.

Mix everything together and transfer to a bottle.

When cleaning your house, dilute about 50ml of the product in a bucket of water.

This cleaner is suitable for all surfaces except natural stone.

2- Eco-friendly multi-surface cleaner

  • 500ml of vinegar
  • Peel one or two citrus fruits (remove the white membrane)

Place citrus peels in a jar and add vinegar.

Let macerate for two weeks before use.

Usage:

Transfer to a spray bottle and use to clean with a cloth.

This cleaner is suitable for all surfaces except natural stone. If in doubt, spray on a small area to see how the product reacts on it.

This product does not require rinsing.

3- Disinfecting Wipes

  • A few old pieces of fabric
  • White vinegar
  • Water

Cut out pieces of the desired size from old cloth and put them in a jar.

Add a mixture of halfwhite vinegar, halffiltered water (is obtained by boiling water).

Add an anti-bacterial or disinfectant essential oil (ex: 10 drops of Tea-Tree essential oil).

Let it macerate.

Usage:

Take out a wipe, wring it out and use it, damp, on the surface to be cleaned.

When the wipe is dirty, put it in the washing machine and once clean, put it back in its jar.

4- Toilet tablets

  • 95g of citric acid
  • 280g of baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon of water
  • 90 drops of Tea-Tree essential oil (disinfectant and anti-bacterial)

Mixbaking soda and citric acid in a bowl.

Mix water and essential oils in a bottle with a spray bottle and shake it up.

Using the spray, gradually mix thewater/essential oil mixture with the bicarbonate andcitric acid by stirring with a whisk or fork. The mixture should have a wet sand texture.

Put the mixture in an ice cube tray and pack it well.

Let set in the fridge for at least 6 hours.

Unmold and put the pastilles in a glass jar.

Usage:

Put a tablet once a week in the toilet bowl.

Leave it on and then scrub with the brush.
