DIY: your natural homemade deodorant

It's time for warm weather, rising temperatures... and sweaty smells! Although the phenomenon is completely natural, it is no less unpleasant for oneself and for others. A deodorant then becomes a great ally but be careful to choose it well. To achieve optimal results, the cosmetics industry uses ingredients that are harmful to your health. Let's see what these ingredients are and how to make an effective deodorant that respects your body?

Déodorants conventionnels : dangereux pour votre santé ?

In most conventional deodorants, we find harmful ingredients for your health as well as for the environment.

  • This is the case of aluminum, a molecule derived from metal, which has the role of limiting or even suppressing perspiration by reducing the size of pores. However, it has been shown that aluminum, absorbed through the skin, is toxic to the body and has an estrogenic action, which can lead, in some cases, to breast cancer.

  • Parabens on the other hand, are endocrine disruptors. Used as preservatives and stabilizers, they are also absorbed by our skin and studies have shown the link between the regular use of parabens in deodorants and an increased risk of breast cancer.

  • Alcohol used in deodorants to neutralize sweaty odors is among the allergens. Be even more careful when your skin is irritated, following shaving among other things.

Also beware of spray deodorants which are flammable and contain volatile organic compounds that you breathe in with each use.

If all these ingredients are harmful, you should know that there are simple, natural solutions that respect your skin flora.

Déodorants naturels : LA solution ?

Beware, "natural" does not mean that the product will necessarily be healthy for your body. This is particularly the case with alum stone. Its sales have exploded in organic stores since consumers became aware of the dangers of "industrial" deodorants. But contrary to all expectations, on closer inspection, alum stoneremainstoxic to your health

Alum stone does not exist as is in nature. It is the chemical transformation of rocks containing alum potassium, or aluminum salts. These are purified and recrystallized, but they are still toxic to the body. Aluminum salts are absorbed through the skin and are likely to promote certain diseases such as Alzheimer's or breast cancer. You should also know that some alum stones are even artificially manufactured and these are even more harmful to your health. Therefore, vigilance is required.

Votre déodorant maison 100% naturel

In order to make your own deodorant, we suggest a small natural recipe, non-toxic, effective, simple to make and inexpensive.

First of all, it is advisable to useorganically grown ingredientsin order to avoid the toxic substances present in pesticides.

Here are the ingredients you will need:

Coconut vegetable oil has antibacterial, moisturizing and nourishing properties. Moreover it will form a kind of protective veil on the skin of your armpits. Be aware, however, that it becomes liquid above 25 degrees, which can change the texture of your deodorant in hot weather.

Baking soda, antibacterial, neutralizes odors and acidity responsible for the development of bacteria. Non-toxic and non-allergenic, it is however important to choose it thin enough not to irritate the skin.

Plamarossa essential oil, is an antibacterial and antifungal essential oil. It fights against the micro-organisms responsible for bad smells and regulates perspiration. Be careful not to put the essential oil directly on the skin, the ideal is to dilute it in a vegetable oil (coconut oil in this case).

And that's it!

We are far from the long list of ingredients present on industrial deodorants but you will see, it is just as effective. Keep in mind, however, that since the skin is an emunctory organ, i.e. a way for the body to evacuate toxins, it is not advisable to completely prevent sweating. Toxins would remain locked up in the body. But it is not pleasant to have large sweat marks under the arms, hence the importance of regulating sweating without preventing it completely. This is the case with our deodorant.

La recette du déo naturel maison

For a small pot of 50 grams :

  • 5 teaspoons of vegetable coconut oil (preferably organic)

  • 2 teaspoons of baking soda

  • 15 drops of essential oil of palmarossa

  • Melt the coconut oil in a double boiler.

  1. In a bowl, combine melted coconut oil and baking soda.

  2. Finish by adding the 15 drops of essential oil of palamarossa and mix quickly.

  3. Pour into a small container with a lid.

The mixture will gradually solidify to the consistency of a cream. During the process, stir regularly so that the bicarbonate does not fall to the bottom of the jar. If this is the case, heat the deodorant for a few seconds in the microwave or on a radiator and mix again.

This deodorant is applied with the finger. This can be disorienting at first but you will soon get used to it!
