DIY: homemade pillow mist for a soothing sleep

During the period from stress, change or doubt, falling asleep can be difficult and sleep not very restorative. The little bike in the head starts to turn, turn, turn... endlessly.

In these cases, there is nothing like lying down in an atmosphere favoring well-being, calm and sleep: a clean, uncluttered and well-ventilated room, not overheated (the ideal temperature is around 18°c) and, why not, smelling good essential oils able to harmonize the nervous sphere.

Rather than using them in cast or application, as we often do, let's ride the wave of overpriced pillow mists sold in stores...by making them ourselves!

By applyingsimple blends to bedroom linens about half an hour before bedtime, the bed becomes a relaxing and nurturing cocoon that invites a soft, serene, restorative night.

As a reminder, it is important to select essential oils of quality. They should be chosen as 100% pure, natural, integral, chemotyped, botanically and biochemically defined (HEBBD), and organic. They are strongly discouraged for pregnant and breastfeeding women as well as children under 3 years old. Before using an essential oil, it is highly recommended to test by applying a drop to the crease of the elbow, to be sure to avoid possible allergic reactions.

With the recommendations made, let's get cooking!

How to prepare your pillow mist?

    • To prepare your pillow mist, you need a 50 ml spray bottle.

    • The base of the recipe is either 45 ml of denatured alcohol (or non-scented vodka) or the same amount of orange blossom hydrosol, for example.

    • 20 drops of true lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia)

    • 20 drops of mandarin (Citrus reticulata) or bitter orange (Citrus aurantium) essential oil

    • 10 drops of lemon verbena essential oil (Aloysia triphylla)

  • 10 drops of Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile)

Simply mix everything together in the spray bottle and let stay in the refrigerator for 24-48 hours. Essential oils are not water soluble, it will be necessary to strongly shake the mixture before use. Essential oils are, here, chosen for their soothing and calming effects on the nervous system. You can of course create your own blends, depending on your olfactory tastes, desires and needs. Just be sure to use the right amount so that you don't get a stubborn and disturbing smell. Don't hesitate to spray it on your curtains and plaids!
