How to soothe the effects of menopause with essential oils?

The menopause and its procession of small inconveniences constitute a crucial moment in the life of a woman. Fortunately, there are very effective essential oils to act against hot flashes, dryness of the mucous membranes, insomnia or mood swings.

Menopause affects women around the age of 50. The ovaries no longer secrete estrogen or progesterone, ovulation stops and menstruation disappears. 

What are the essential oils to relieve menopause?

Although many women experience menopause well, some of them experience more or less significant inconveniences: hot flashes (especially at night), insomnia, mood swings or even dryness of the mucous membranes which can make sexual relations difficult. Several essential oils allow to soften the symptoms of menopause.

The essential oil in this period of a woman's life is to be able to estrogen-likeand it is the EO of clary sage. By mimicking the action of estrogens, it allows to alleviate the discomfort linked to menopause. This essential oil specific to this period is to be associated with other EO according to the targeted problem (hot flushes, vaginal dryness or mood swings).

The essential oil of clary sage against the inconvenience of menopause  

This essential oil is particularly rich in sclareol, a molecule which mimics the action of estrogen. However, it is the deficit in this hormone which is at the origin of all the inconveniences that you can meet. Clary sage essential oil is therefore effective against hot flashes, vaginal dryness and mood swings

  • To fight against hot flashes, you can consume morning, noon and evening two drops of essential oil of clary sage in a small spoon of honey or olive oil. This accompaniment is to be done during 21 days. Take a break of 7 days before resuming. 
  • To fight against vaginal dryness, it is also possible to carry out morning and evening a massage of the bottom of the belly with a drop of essential oil of clary sage diluted in the vegetable oil during 21 days (followed by 7 days of pause). 

Precautions: Clary sage essential oil should not be used by women with mastosis, fibroids or hormone-dependent cancer pathology (or history). Its internal use should not be regular without therapeutic advice.

Peppermint against hot flashes

It is estimated that 80% of women report suffering from hot flashes at the time of menopause. These hot flashes are due to an abnormal dilation of the blood vessels following the hormonal upheavals that women experience at this time of their life. The essential oil of peppermint is particularly recommended to fight against blood vasodilatation!

Menthol, present in significant quantities in this essential oilis a first-order vasoconstrictor. Peppermint EO has a complementary action to that of clary sage. The latter acts on the factor that triggers hot flashes (the drop in estrogen levels) whereas peppermint acts on the excessive dilation of blood vessels. 

Precautions: Peppermint essential oil should not be consumed by people with epilepsy and is used on an occasional basis and in limited doses. Do not apply near the eyes. Finally, it would have a stimulating effect on the ovarian function and is thus disadvised in case of estrogen-dependent pathology. The essential oil of bergamot is not to be used in a person suffering from gallstones and is very photosensitizing.

Tea tree oil against the consequences of vaginal dryness

Tea tree oil, or tea treeIt is a must in your natural pharmacy kit! It is in particular very used by the women to fight the mycoses and the vaginitis. However, the vaginal dryness sometimes induced by the menopause weakens the mucous membranes. The women can thus suffer from itchings or burnings on the level of the vulva. 

  • You can then put two drops of this essential oil in your underwear. Another solution: you can dilute up to 20% of the essential oil of tea tree ofUse a vegetable oil to massage the lower abdomen whenever you feel the need. 

Precautions: Tea tree essential oil should not be used in the vagina.

Marjoram oil against insomnia

Insomnia is second only to hot flashes in the list of minor problems experienced by menopausal women. The decrease in estrogen levels can indeed disrupt sleep. To fall asleep serenely and have a quality sleep, the essential oil of marjoram is ideal! It is indeed rich in terpinen-4-ol, a molecule which has anxiolytic and calming properties.

The essential oil of marjoram acts by calming the central nervous system and promoting muscle relaxation. 

Precautions: The use of this essential oil is not recommended for women with asthma or epilepsy.

The essential oil of fine lavender helps to fight against mood swings 

Do you suddenly feel like laughing or crying for no reason? Mood swings are one of the classic disorders caused by the onset of menopause. All you have to do is breathe deeply and calmly for a while. essential oil of fine lavender to find your serenity. You can also associate the calming effect of fine lavender with the soothing action of marjoram with shells and with the anti-stress virtues of ylang-ylang to better manage your mood swings. 

  • For that, mix in equal parts these 3 essential oils and diffuse the mixture one hour morning and evening in your interior. The essential oil of ylang-ylang should not be used pure on the skin.

The essential oil of Boise de rose to moisturize the epidermis

With the decrease in estrogen that accompanies menopause, the skin and mucous membranes become thinner, more fragile and therefore dry out more easily. To protect your skin from dehydration, rosewood essential oil, known for its purifying and regenerating action, is ideal. 

  • You can apply morning and evening on the face and neck a mixture of 5 drops of essential oil of rosewood in 10 drops of vegetable oil of rose hip. 

Cautions: Rosewood essential oil is prohibited during the first 3 months of pregnancy.
