Turn off the lights at night to stay healthy

Currently, everyone knows that the number of cancers is increasing. We do not yet know all the factors that contribute to this type of disease, but we can put in place a number of preventive measures.

For example, avoid light sources in the bedroom at night while sleeping. Indeed, several essential biological functions are performed by the body during sleep and depend on circadian rhythms, i.e. the 24-hour rhythm and the alternation of day and night.

All of these biological processes can be disturbed even by very weak light such as that emitted by LEDs, an iPod, a laptop or even the light of electronic devices such as a computer or television screen. Researchers have proven that even a luminous emission during sleep can completely disrupt the circadian rhythm and wake-sleep cycles and in the long run, this can influence the mechanisms of cell division. In order to ensure the cellular repair and regeneration functions essential to maintaining optimal health, the body needs at least 7 to 9 hours of uninterrupted nightly sleep without any interference.

Abnormal, cancer-like cell divisions and changes in gene expression were found after a simple 1-hour exposure to artificial light during sleep. One hour is therefore enough to alter the biological cellular clocks and disrupt the normal processes of reproduction and gene repair. It is well known that cancer starts with genetic disturbances.

The endocrinologists also report that exposure to a light source during sleep disrupts the physiological processes related to melatonin, according to them this type of exposure would reduce its production by half. In the long term, this affects not only sleep itself, but also the processes of thermoregulation, blood pressure regulation, glucose and insulin regulation, all of which are essential for maintaining homeostasis. It appears that even exposure to dim lights for 8 hours before bedtime would delay melatonin release by 90 minutes.

The last decade has seen our daily lives enriched by a large number of electrical devices that produce artificial light. So much so that they are now blending into our daily environment without us even realizing it. Many people are not only exposed to these devices during the day, but they are also exposed at night, which inevitably influences melatonin production.

The latest scientific data confirms the importance of sleeping in a completely dark room. By completely blacking out your room, you will reduce your risk of cancer and optimize the beneficial and regenerating effect of a good night's sleep. This is a very simple and easy practical tip for staying healthy.
