Definition of sciatic nerve pain

Who has never suffered from that twinge that feels like an electric shock starting from the hip and sometimes extending into the foot? Sciatic nerve pain gives a pinching sensation and can totally disable a person by reducing their movements and forcing them to reduce their lifestyle. The responsible is none other than this nerve which goes down in the posterior region of the thigh to the knee and sometimes even to the sole of the foot.

sciatic nerve

In the most common case, this nerve is simply irritated by the accumulation of toxins in the area where it is located. We speak then about the current sciatic neuralgia. But the pain can also be due to a hernia between two vertebrae, a tumor, a rheumatism, etc. and then we are very often dealing with a pinched nerve. Unlike sciatic neuritis, which takes less time to heal, sciatica resulting from a spinal condition takes longer to heal and the attacks are more intense. Very often patients fear and worry about the arrival of a new crisis which can sometimes be unbearable.

Natural methods to relieve sciatic nerve pain

Fortunately, surgery is not mandatory for all cases and NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are not necessarily essential. Natural methods can relieve these moments of intense pain:

  • If the nerve is trapped, the best thing to do would be to loosen it and put it back in place with gentle gymnastics followed by a specialized therapist. Gentle stretching or yoga are very appreciated but be careful because you can find all kinds of exercises to do on the internet so be careful because mistakes can be fatal in some cases. Do not attempt any manipulation alone.
  • To calm the pain locally, the use of plants or essential oils of the biochemical terpene aldehyde type are appreciated. They are calming and anti inflammatory major general and local. Because of their spasmolytic property, they relax the entire muscular system. Let's take for example the lemon basil or the lemon bedew. However, beware of their irritating power on the skin and mucous membranes, it is then advisable to dilute them at least 10% in a vegetable oil before any local application.
  • Rest is, in my opinion, the best remedy because the leg in pain must be put in a state of wakefulness. Learning to relax is also part of the game of life, and perhaps your sciatica is simply a sign that it's time to relax, to rest. Wouldn't this be a call from the body?
Relieving the pain is not enough because it is necessary to go deeper and face the deep causes that create this mail: Toxins. In addition to the detoxification treatment that can be effective in a naturopathic follow-up, here are two tips that can support the patient who wants to get out of it:
  • The modification of its food hygiene by turning to a hypo-toxic diet which will limit the risk of intoxication of the body.
  • Cold sitz baths - France Guillain Method - will allow the pain to calm down and the body's toxins to be eliminated more easily.
In his book "the Harmonist Method", Raymond Dextrait invites us to use the following methods:
  • Rub the painful area with camphorated oil and garlic.
  • Application of hot poultices with leaves of ivy.
  • Fomentations - very hot compresses - with a decoction of oregano leaves.
  • Local steam baths with a mixture of thyme, mint, verbena and sweet woodruff (50Gr of each for 2 liters of water)

Pregnant women are very often invalidated by this pain that surprises them vividly throughout their pregnancies but to reassure you ladies, sciatica in pregnant women disappears completely after delivery.
A warning however on the pain time. If you have been suffering for more than 3 months, it would be smart to consult a doctor or a physiotherapist who can direct you to a different solution because sometimes surgery is unavoidable.
