What is Spirulina powder?
Spirulina is a blue-green freshwater algae. It is mainly composed of vegetable proteins (50% to 70%), is very rich in vitamins (A, B, E), minerals (iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc, potassium, manganese) and also contains unsaturated fatty acids. All this makes it an excellent nutritional supplement useful for athletes and convalescents. It could help solve many problems of malnutrition in the world.
What are the properties of Spirulina powder?
Spirulina, very rich in valuable nutrients, is a kind of "super-food". It contains 50% to 70% of quality proteins (both for its composition and digestibility) and significant amounts of carotenoids (beta-carotene, cryptoxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin ...), iron, phycocyanine (which is attributed an important antioxidant activity).
Spirulina also contains chlorophyll, gamma-linolenic acid (unsaturated fatty acid of the omega-6 family), vitamins and small quantities of several minerals. It is low in calories and seems to be immuno-modulating.
What are the traditional indications?
Several studies attribute to spirulina a more or less important contribution in the treatment of leukoplakia, hyperlipidemia, cholesterol, glycemia control in diabetics, or in the fight against certain pathogens (viruses such as HIV or micro-organisms responsible for pneumonia) or against toxic substances such as arsenic, chemotherapy agents or anticancer radiotherapy.
Currently, if nothing allows to draw clear conclusions on the clinical effectiveness of spirulina in humans, it seems to be a valuable contribution for convalescents, athletes, malnourished people, vegetarians/vegetarians... What are the advices of use for spirulina in powder?
- 0,5g to 3g per day before or during meals.
- Spirulina being a very concentrated food and having detoxifying properties, it is recommended to start with 0,25g per day and to increase by 0,25g per week.
- This minimizes the danger of various symptoms (gastrointestinal disorders, headaches...) related to the detoxifying properties of spirulina and due to too high starting doses.
- For some people spirulina can have a stimulating effect, so it is better not to take it in the evening.
