For your heart and brain. These Omega-3s are extracted from the oils of cold-water oily fish such as salmon and halibut. The main ones are EPA (eicopentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), which can be synthesized (slowly) by the body from alpha-linolenic acid (an essential fatty acid (i.e. not synthesized by the body) found in certain vegetable fats and leafy greens).
EPA is active at circulatory level, where it prevents fatty deposits from "sticking" to vascular walls and prevents the formation of blood clots (blood thinner). It lowers cholesterol levels and has anti-inflammatory properties. DHA is best known for its action on brain activity: it contributes to the development of the brain, 2/3 of which is made up of neurons.
DHA is also a constituent of the retina, protecting the integrity of visual and auditory function. The combination of these two Omega-3 fatty acids helps protect against cardiovascular problems and hypertension, while promoting the integrity of brain function. A regular intake of Omega-3 is recommended during pregnancy, to support the healthy development of the fetus. The fetus and infant cannot synthesize DHA.
