Relieve sciatica with acupuncture and acupressure

Acupuncture is one of the five branches of traditional Chinese medicine. It works on the whole body, based on the Yin and Yang, the energy meridians... This gentle therapy consists in introducing, on specific points of the body, fine needles, with the aim of provoking the desired reactions and restoring an energy balance.

Acupressure is based on the same principles. It involves applying pressure to the same points targeted by acupuncture. It is easier to practice by yourself, since it does not require any training, but a good knowledge of the "map" of the points.

These two techniques are used to relieve many ailments, from depression to sleep disorders, anxiety or physical pain, whatever they may be. If used properly, these gentle methods can be very useful in overcoming many daily problems.

The Ling Gu point

For the sciatic nerve, it is the Ling Gu point, also called Hegu, discovered by Master Tung, that brings immediate relief from pain. If you are unable to consult a professional acupuncturist, it is possible to apply pressure to this miracle point yourself.

"Ling Gu" means "bone of the spirit". It can be worked on daily to relieve various pains, especially those related to the back. It is located above the hand, between the first and the second metacarpus, therefore between the thumb and the index finger, a little higher than the soft part which allows the articulation of the thumb. By placing a finger of the opposite hand on this spot, you can feel a kind of hollow. For the effect to be noticed, the needle or the pressure must be done on the point opposite to the painful limb; i.e. if you feel pain on the left side, it is the right hand that should be worked.

It is currently not known exactly how this point works. Some studies suggest that it stimulates the production of endorphins, natural painkillers, and others that it increases blood flow and therefore has an ability to relieve pain.

To properly manipulate your Ling Gu point, acupuncturists explain that you should place a finger on the fleshy part between the thumb and forefinger of the opposite hand and press down hard. If done properly, you will feel some pain.
One or two minutes may be enough to give you relief, but the benefits are really felt after 20 to 40 minutes of constant, strong pressure. In addition to relieving sciatica pain, practicing acupressure on this point will make you feel better and less anxious, and may even relieve headaches or stomach aches during menstruation.

You can practice this little exercise easily at work, on your couch or on the bus. Try to do it for half an hour to feel the real benefits and don't wait for the moment when the pain is no longer bearable.
