The jala neti, ayurvedic technique of sinus cleansing

Subject to chronic sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, stuffy nose? Do you simply want to takenatural care of your ENT sphere? Discover the jala neti, an ancestral method from the Ayurvedic tradition that allows to clean your nasal cavities naturally.

Everyone knows about saline nose washes that are performed when babies are washed. However, despite its undisputed benefits, this hygiene treatment is unfortunately neglected when the child grows up... Here are several reasons to get back to it and adopt it in his daily routine.

The jala neti in ayurveda

Ayurveda is traditional Indian medicine. Like all traditional medicines, its vision is holistic: the body and mind are one. One cannot work on the body without working on the mind and vice versa. In this context, the jala neti is not only a technique of "cleaning the nose with water" as it can be literally translated but also a technique derived from pranayamas which are breathing exercises of yoga allowing to circulate the energies in the body.

La pratique du jala neti

In a lota, which is a ceramic or plastic container (avoid the plastic) shaped like a teapot with an elongated, ergonomic spout, dissolve 1 teaspoon of Guerande salt or Himalayan salt in warm water. The water should not sting the nose. Readjust the proportionsof salt as needed to keep it pleasant. For reference: the water should taste like tears and be at body temperature.

Lean over the edge of the bathtub or sink, turn your head and insert the tip of the lota into one nostril without forcing it, alternating between the right and left sides. The water should flow out of the opposite nostril by itself. If the water does not flow, insist on it until the mucus dissolves, or tilt your head more, or make sure the nozzle is not pressing on the septum. If some water goes down the back of the throat, it's okay, just readjust your position.

Finally, gently blow one nostril after the other to remove the water as well as residual mucus.

Important : avoid at all costs going out right after cleaning at the risk of getting sick . Indeed, since the nasal mucosa is sensitized, dust, viruses and other microorganisms can infiltrate and cause inflammation. It is therefore advisable to perform this practicein the evening or to sufficiently wait until the nasal passages and cavities are perfectly dry.

The first few times are not pleasant, we must admit! But this practice has the merit of bringingmany benefits. Here they are in the following paragraph.

The benefits of jala neti

First of all,the jala neti ,integrated into a personal hygiene routine, helps to clean the sinuses deeply by eliminating mucus and "wash" the nasal passages of any pro-inflammatory presences.

In addition, this technique is perfect for preventing many infections such as sinusitis, rhinitis even allergic.

In addition, in case ofinflammatory crisis (pain, blocked nose, with or without fever), jala neti is highly recommended to relieve discomfort from congestion and speed healing.

Jala neti is also a natural method to protect the nasal cavities from all assaults including inflammation, irritation and allergies due to pollen, pollution and dust.

The jala neti, for whom?

The jala neti is for everyone, young and old, healthy as well as chronic ENT patients and allergy sufferers. It is to be integrated into a daily routine at the beginning of winter and in spring for those who suffer from allergic rhinitis due to pollens (among others).

Otherwise, 2 to 3 times a week for regular maintenance or whenever the need arises (after a session of DIY, cleaning, an outing in town, sudden changes in temperature, etc. ...). The important thing is to listen to yourself in order to respond to your own needs.
