Canine aromatherapy: treating your pet naturally

Our dogs love essential oils too!

This is a question you often ask yourself: can my dog benefit from the beneficial properties of essential oils? The answer is undeniably a big YES!

Used carefully and sparingly, canine aromatherapy can be very wise just as it is in humans.

Some buying tips

Be sure to choose 100% pure and natural essential oils from organic farming. It is also important to use strict packaging and quality criteria. The oils must be stored in an amber glass bottle with a dropper and the label on the bottle or package must clearly state the Latin name of the oil, the vernacular name, the extraction procedure, the country of origin, the method of cultivation (organic, cultivated, gathered, wild), the notion of 100% pure and natural and finally the AB logo (Agriculture Biologique). High quality essential oils are more expensive but have remarkable effectiveness on a therapeutic level.

Some essential oils to focus on in dogs

  • Exotic Basil (Ocimum basilicum ssp basilicum)
Antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-infectious and decongestant, exotic or tropical Basil essential oil is equally suitable for bloating and aerophagia as it is for circulatory disorders.
  • Noble Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile)
Antispasmodic, painkiller, anti-inflammatory and internal parasiticide, noble or Roman chamomile is used for diarrhea and vomiting, neuritis, pruritic dermatological conditions or roundworms and taenias.
  • Clove (Eugenia caryophyllus)
Clove or Clove essential oil is analgesic, bactericidal, fungicidal, virucidal and general tonic. It is useful against dental pain, physical fatigue as well as ticks, fleas and ringworm. However, Clove is very dermocaustic and should never be applied pure to the skin. This essential oil is also not recommended for pregnant bitches and young dogs under one year old.
  • Italian Helichrysum (Helichrysum italicum)
Anti-hematoma, anticoagulant, blood thinner, healing, powerful anti-inflammatory, relaxing and calming, Italian Helichrysum or Immortelle essential oil is perfectly indicated in arthritis, arteritis, hematomas, anxiety and depression. Its prolonged use is prohibited in pregnant females, puppies under three months and epileptic subjects because of the presence of ketones.
  • Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata)
Antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, nerve relaxant, hypotensive and antidepressant, Ylang Ylang essential oil is involved in anxiety, insomnia, hyperactivity, intense pain, sexual fatigue, stress and hypertension.
    And on the app side?
  • Oral application
It is necessary to dilute the essential oils. As for humans they can be
aggressive to the oral mucosa and gastric wall. Essential oils can be diluted in a vegetable oil or honeydew, coated in a gelatinous capsule or soaked on neutral tablets.
  • External application
Essential oils penetrate through the animal's skin as they do for humans. They can be applied pure according to the precautions of use and contraindications, diluted in a vegetable oil, a non-greasy gel, a cream or ointment or a shampoo. To go furtherI advise you to consult my ebook "15 essential oils for dogs - My Aromatherapy canine without danger" to download in click here
