Diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Real or Misplaced?

In the United States since 2006, at least 4.5 million American children under the age of 18 have been labeled as hyperactive or attention-deficit (ADHD), simply because they are among the youngest in their class or simply a little less mature than their peers. For example, one study reported that among younger students in the same grade, 60% were diagnosed with ADHD, while older students in the same grade were not.

It is important to realize that for young children (6 - 7 years old), 10 months or a year difference is a real gap in maturity. Indeed, one year at this age is equivalent to 1/6 of their life. Some researchers go so far as to say that about 20% of these children, nearly one million in the US alone, are likely to have been misdiagnosed.

Indeed, currently, this so-called attention deficit disorder characterized by lack of concentration or hyperactivity (ADHD) seems to be a catch-all term for children who "don't behave well" in the eyes of the conventional school system. And so, as soon as a child stirs a little and shows some difficulty in concentrating by simple comparison with more mature classmates, he is labeled as hyperactive.

Still, let's keep in mind that this diagnosis of ADHD syndrome is based solely on a completely subjective assessment that encompasses a range of signs such as inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behaviors. No clinical or physical examination can reveal any dysfunction and confirm the diagnosis.

Among these children, who are described as hyperactive and impulsive, there are times when they may also fidget or squirm frequently, have difficulty playing quietly and sitting still for long periods of time, be inattentive and distracted during sustained and prolonged intellectual effort, and show signs of impatience. These "symptoms" are not unusual or abnormal and can be part of the attitude of any healthy child with vital energy still intact.

Indeed, it is currently known that chemical pollutions, in particular by vaccines, and harmful radiations (cell phones, wifi) have a very strong tendency to make the current children amorphous. This, in contrast, makes others appear to be hyperactive, when they are simply "normal" but no longer fit the current norms.

Some children only show these symptoms at school. In that case, perhaps we should
ask ourselves about the real value of current school programs!

For those who have these symptoms at home, but not at school, it is probably related to the fact that they control themselves during school periods and release their excess energy when they get home. Let's remember that a child cannot develop all facets of his or her personality simultaneously. He may therefore "appear young" in his behavior, but turn out to be very mature in other areas, areas that are not part of this diagnosis and therefore not explored by doctors.

Perhaps all that is needed is to broaden the criteria for diagnosing this disorder and to train physicians to ask the "right" questions in order to make the "right" diagnosis and to know whether the child is truly immature for his or her age. Contrary to what many specialists say, mothers are often in the best position to assess their children's behaviour and it is with their collaboration that the diagnosis should be made.

What may be the causes of this increase in ADHD?

The factors that explain ADHD are varied and you have certainly heard about them. These include:

  • Refined and processed sugars and grains, corn and fructose syrups are probably involved. It has been observed that more and more children are intolerant to cereals and particularly to wheat and gluten, and not only hyperactive children.
  • Some researchers explain these behavioral problems as allergic reactions. According to them, chemically sensitive people could present attention disorders only by simple contact with clothes carrying traces of washing products or fabric softeners.
  • Let's not forget dyes and other food additives that can also cause or at least worsen ADHD, especially if combined with sugars such as fructose.
  • Fluoridated water is also suspected in these behavioral concerns as well as environmental toxins. Thus, children whose mothers used cigarettes, alcohol, or other drugs during pregnancy are at greater risk for ADHD.
  • Exposure to heavy metals (lead, mercury, aluminum present in particular in vaccines), to pesticides or recently to bisphenol, appears in the rank of potential defendants. Strong correlations have been established between the frequency of neurological disorders and the quantities of vaccines received during childhood.
  • Adjuvants in vaccines are also increasingly incriminated not only in ADHD, but also in many other neurological and health disorders.
  • We note that interventions during birth (especially oxygen supply), epidurals and caesarean deliveries are becoming more frequent. All these factors to which the newborn is subjected, would significantly increase the risk of mental developmental delay.
  • In spite of all this, some scientists maintain the hypothesis of genetic factors that would predispose certain subjects to this type of disorder.

Remember that parents are (partly) responsible for food choices. Since nutrition is a critical factor in a child's normal development and behavior. It seems obvious that a child who only eats refined foods and sugars, processed foods loaded with chemicals or genetically modified ingredients, and sodas rather than pure water is less likely to experience harmonious physical and mental development.

A low intake of fresh vegetables and fruits, of essential omega-3 fats and an excess of saturated fats (omega-6) are all risk factors that can contribute to the development of this type of disorder. A body nourished in a healthy and balanced way will allow the brain to develop harmoniously, to express its maximum potential and to function optimally.

To "treat" ADHD, doctors do not hesitate to deploy the heavy artillery and treatments such as Ritalin or Concerta are generously prescribed. These are heavy neurological and behavioral treatments. When you look at the package insert, you discover with horror that the list of side effects occupies 2/3 of it.

In addition to being costly, these treatments are dangerous and can lead to long-term health complications, including death. These allopathic products generate more health concerns than they solve. And yet, colossal sums of money are currently wasted on such completely inadequate treatments, the long-term effects and impacts on the child's health of which are totally unknown.

We must be aware that in the face of this ADHD "epidemic", conventional medicine is creating a generation of "drug addicts", since once the diagnosis has been made, doctors have no other approach than that of conventional pharmacopoeia. Ritalin and Concerta contain formulations of methylphenidate, a powerful psychostimulant drug that belongs to the same family as cocaine, while other products such as Adderall, more commonly used in the United States contain amphetamines. Let's remember that the sale of this type of drugs in the street is completely illegal while their prescription is endorsed by the current health system! The consent of the system and the parents does not remove the potential risks of this type of medication, which are identical to those of street drugs.

These allopathic products are addictive and cause the same effects on neurons and neurotransmitters as those presented by cocaine addicts. Placing this population of young children on neuroleptics greatly increases the risk of initiating in them a serious addiction to illicit drugs.

Another alarming finding that few people are aware of is that taking this type of medication, like many antidepressants, increases the likelihood of suicidal thoughts and behaviours, as well as frequent hallucinations, aggressive behaviours and heart attacks. Obviously, it does not alarm many people to know that thousands of children are drugged and therefore run a high risk of addiction simply because they behave normally for their age!

In the United States, pharmacists dispense five times as much Ritalin as they do throughout the rest of the world. This medication stimulates the central nervous system and can cause side effects such as high blood pressure, increased heart rate, body temperature and alertness. There is also a decrease in appetite, very frequent insomnia and headaches and the appearance of much more serious health problems such as cancer.

It would be preferable to consider other lighter means of action such as the application of certain dietary measures like the simple elimination of sugars, sweets and cereals (wheat and gluten). It is also easy to replace sugary drinks and other sodas with non-fluorinated and purified water or fresh and not artificially sweetened fruit juices or to increase omega-3 fatty acids by including vegetable oils (flaxseed oil) or fatty fish in your diet. Other measures such as eliminating dairy products, saturated fats and foods treated with pesticides, preservatives, coloring agents and other additives, whose simple absorption can trigger or aggravate symptoms, are also easily applicable to daily life. We should even eliminate household chemicals and pesticides, detergents and cleaning products (washing and clothing) by replacing them with natural products without perfumes or polluting chemical molecules.

A healthy lifestyle, outdoor oxygenation sessions, sports activities, sensory awakening activities, emotional management or energy techniques are also very beneficial. These measures alone ensure optimal connection between nerve cells, a proper balance of neurotransmitter secretions, and would likely prevent or resolve most cases of ADHD. Drugs remain the ultimate solution which should be reserved only as a very, very last resort for serious cases in which no other means of action is effective, and not for a simple lack of maturity!
