Green Clay: healing with clay

Clay has historically been a natural remedy for many ailments and has been used around the world. Whether green, white, red, pink, ochre or blue, ingested or used externally, clay has been part of the traditional pharmacopoeia for thousands of years. In this article, we will take a closer look at a type of clay that is most commonly used in our countries: green clay.

Green clay composition

The clay is a sedimentary rock rich in aluminum silicates but also in magnesium. The color is due to iron oxides (limonite). Its composition depends on the richness of the soil in minerals and trace elements.

There are commonly two varieties of green clay: Illite, which comes from the state of Illinois in the United States, and Montmorillonite from Montmorillon, Vienne, France.

It is therefore found in temperate climates and alkaline environments. Of great purity, green clay Montmorillonite is the one generally recommended in argilotherapy treatments. It is extracted from quarries in the Massif Central, Languedoc and Provence.

For the preparation of cataplasm, it is recommended to use wooden or glass utensils and containers because metal can disrupt ionic exchanges, thus altering the effectiveness of green clay.

Different cases in which green clay is of great help

  • Injury: green clay is antibacterial and antiseptic. Cover the wound with a thick poultice, which must not be too deep or too extensive. Green clay has the power to quickly stop bleeding and promote healing.
  • Surface Burn/Sunburn: applied as a poultice prepared with cold water, green clay stops the fire, calms the pain and heals the burn. It is important to not let the clay dry and to repeat every 20 minutes until symptoms improve.
  • Abscess: as mentioned above, green clay is antibacterial, antiseptic and healing. It also has a high absorbing power, allowing to attract to it the affected tissues in order to evacuate them.
  • Sprain, tendonitis, arthritis :green clay, applied as a thick poultice to inflamed areas, relieves pain. Repeat as soon as the clay begins to dry.
  • Acne : In a mask, green clay purifies the skin by absorbing excess sebum, disinfects the skin while promoting healing. Cleanse the face as soon as the clay begins to dry. To be done once or twice a week in addition to a personalized and adapted lifestyle.
  • Insect sting: thanks to its well-marked absorption capacity, green clay allows to extract the venom and relieve the pain of a bee sting for example.

Internal use of green clay

Some populations eat clay to cure themselves of certain ailments whether bacterial, viral or parasitic. Here, it is about usinggreen clay in the form of "clay water".

To do this, simply put 1 tablespoon green clay powder in a large glass of water (prefer high to wide). Mix well and let the mixture settle overnight. The next morning, when you wake up, drink this water without stirring beforehand. This beverage should be consumed away from any medication because, as we have seen previously, clay has a high absorbency, annihilating any effect of your treatments (birth control pills included).

Another important point and to remember to drink plenty of water between meals and to limit the consumption of fat to avoid risking a "clogging" of clay in the intestines.

Green clay water can relieve cases of diarrhea , Whether viral (gasto-enteritis) or due to food poisoning, diarrhea can be contained with green clay taken internally. Indeed, it attracts pathogens and expels them through natural channels. In addition, its absorbing power allows to harden the stools and to eliminate the bloating.

In addition, it has a calming effect on irritated mucous membranes, acting as a dressing during gastritis, ulcer, intestinal hyper-permeability, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic diarrhea, turista etc...

Also in its internal purifying role, green clay is a very good anti-parasitic of the digestive tract.

At the same time, taking green clay water internally allows for an overall purification of the entire body as well as a complete remineralization.

Contraindications of green clay

Internally, green clay should be taken over a short period of time to start. If you suffer from chronic constipation, high blood pressure, intestinal obstruction, it is formally contraindicated to take it.
